As of 2010, Suncor has a production capacity of 440,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil (SCO) per day through its two upgrader plants, U1 and U2. The bitumen for the upgraders is extracted from Suncor's Steepbank and Millenium mines across the river as well as the MacKay River and Firebag steam-assisted-gravity-drainage (SAGD) projects.

A third plant under construction adjacent to Suncor, called "Voyageur Upgrader", will process bitumen mined at the nearby Voyageur South and Fort Hills mines. This plant, a joint venture of Suncor (51%) and Total E&P Canada (49%), will have a capacity of 200,000 barrels per day of SCO when it opens around 2016.
