Joyce F. Brown Academic Building

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 28th Street, 220
 university, Modern (architecture)

10-story modernist education building completed in 2025. Designed by SHoP Architects, the building sits on a shallow plot between Seventh and Eighth Avenues on the northernmost edge of the FIT campus and contains classrooms, administrative offices, review and exhibition spaces, and a student quad illuminated by skylights. It connects directly to the Feldman Building behind it.

Facing the street is a reflective glass curtain wall with its upper and lower sections striped by vertical bronze-hued metal fans. The fins have an undulating sculptural structure, and are interrupted across a 2-story section of the curtain wall before continuing up the top floors to the roof line. The entire curtain wall section projects out from the earth-toned metal paneling to the east and west, which continues onto the narrower east and west facades. The panels are laid vertically, and arranged in staggered fashion from floor to floor. On the west elevation there is a thin, recessed vertical band of windows breaking the metal paneling, situated about a third of the way back from the front. At the ground floor, six columns support the projecting mass above.
