office building, Art Deco (architecture)
135-foot, 10-story Art-Deco office building completed in 1928. The facade is clad in beige-tan brick. The 2-story base has double-height brick piers articulating the facade into five bays, as well as an extra bay in the 4-story annex at the west end. The two east bays have been altered with black corrugated metal, into which is set a wood-and-glass double-doors at the lower left of each bay. The other bays have triple show-windows, with a glass door replacing one of the panes in the west end bay. The brick at the annex is a brighter color than the older section. Dark-red iron spandrel panels separate the lower two floors at each bay, adorned with Renaissance ornament. The 2nd floor has large 4-over-2 or 3-over-2 windows in black iron framing, and the base is capped by a broad stone band and cornice, with a row of roundels and the words "NEW YORK AUCTION CO." inscribed in it.
The upper floors have three windows in each bay, divided by brick mullions, except for the 3rd & 4th floors of the annex, which have 4-over-2 windows. The brick spandrel panels between floors each have a simple geometric shape in brick. The annex is capped by a simple stone coping at the 4th floor.
The three middle bays of the main building begin a series of terraced, shallow setbacks above the 7th floor, with simple stone capitals at the piers and mullions. The end bays have similar setbacks beginning one floor higher. The west elevation above the annex is clad in dark-red brick and has two middle bays of triple-windows and outer bays of paired windows, narrowing at the setbacks on the top floors.
