Karaağaç

Greece / Evros / Kastaneai /

One of the reasons the region of Karaağaç was given to Turkey by the Treaty of Lausanne, was the Train Station. The large Turkish city of Edirne (Adrianoupolis) which anyway was for Turkey in 1923 had not its own train station and the station serving was Karaağaç. So it was how this small piece west of the river Maritsa - Ebros was given to Turkey, in order not to leave Edirne (Adrianoupolis) without train. In this way, the Greek trains going north passed by the Turkish border (Karagats) and the Turkish trains went to Edirne passed by Greek territory (New Orestiada). Finally to see the similarities we have between us Greeks and our neigburs Turks, suffice to say that it took 50 years after 1923 and the Treaty of Lausanne, to build the two countries in 1975, rail lines not crossing to the territory of the other country.
