evangelicalism, protestant church
3-story church completed in 1887 for the German Gospel Tabernacle. Designed by William Niebuhr, it was altered to a stable in 1984 by architect John D. Haas. The Metropolitan Community Church was founded to minister to the LGBT community whose members were not welcome in most churches. The New York congregation held its first service in 1972 and moved to this location in 1994.
The facade is clad in red brick, with the ground floor in white-painted stone (with white-painted brick on top). Just left of center are black metal double-doors below a colorful mural. A former window opening high up on the right has been filled-in, and is partially covered by a signboard that is installed between the 1st & 2nd floors. The end piers at the upper floors are grey brick, and are banded at the 2nd floor, which has a large window opening in the center, and a smaller one on either side. The windows have stacks of short, horizontal panes. The 3rd floor has three similar bays, with round-arched tops. They have voussoirs of white brick with grey keystones, and there is corbelling at the bases of the arches. Another pair of grey-brick piers divide the bays at the 3rd floor, and a grey stone band course separates the 2nd & 3rd floors. The roof line is peaked, with a grey stone coping and a small gable in the center.
