This is part of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and it opened in 1994. This unit is a transfer facility where inmates spend as little as 24 hours (for close custody offenders en route to a permanent facility) or as long as 2 years (for low risk inmates serving shorter sentences). The unit houses 2,130 male offenders, most of then in open dormitories of either 50 or 54; each dorm with open bathrooms (with no dividers or shower curtains), two televisions, four viewing benches, and six tables for games, crafts, writing, and reading. There is an area of close-custody housing (for offenders with histories of violent or disruptive behavior) and an area of 50 cells for administrative separation or solitary confinement.
