Seneca Village was founded in 1825 by free blacks, the first such community in the city. At its peak, the community had 264 residents, three churches, a school, and two cemeteries. The village was a beacon of integrated life when immigrants moved into the village. When Central Park was proposed, the future of the village was doomed. In 1857, the city used eminent domain to reclaimed the land and evicted the inhabitants of the village.
