stadium, interesting place, historical layer / disappeared object
The first site of the Polo Grounds, built in 1876 for the sport of polo, and the only form of the stadium actually used for polo. By 1880 the NY Metropolitans were the first professional baseball team to play there, and remained the sole professional occupant through the 1882 season. A new team was organized by 1883 called the New York Gotham’s, nicknamed and then eventually called the NY Giants by the late 1880's. By 1889 the city had extended the street grid uptown and West 111th Street was built through the field, forcing the Giants to move uptown, and the park was no more.
