For several years, an Albertsons here (#402) competed with a nearby Safeway, but due to the merger between the two companies, the Safeway was closed and became Haggen Northwest Fresh. However, due to Safeway being a fixture in the community since 1967, the decision was made to also convert the Albertsons into a Safeway. The Albertsons closed on the evening of March 29, 2015 and reopened Friday the same week as a Safeway, with additional construction following (turning it into a "Lifestyle" Safeway, like the old store used to be). The store carried the Safeway brands after the conversion (this being months before other Albertsons stores did) but features from Albertsons like their fried chicken recipe or Dietz & Watson deli items. The Safeway carried over the store number, which was probably recycled from an older Safeway #402 that closed long ago.

  • If anyone's curious, the conversion happened very soon after the merger between the companies, and the Safeway brands had not yet reached the Albertsons LLC/NAI stores.
