Baryshnikov Arts Center

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 37th Street, 450

6-story modernist art center completed in 2005. Designed by John Averitt, the building includes the 238-seat Jerome Robbins Theater, the Howard Gilman Performance Space, and four column-free studios. The building also houses the Orchestra of St. Luke's DiMenna Center for Classical Music. BAC serves approximately 700 artists and up to 22,000 audience members annually through presentations and artist residencies.

The facade is composed on bare concrete and glass. In the middle is a glass wall reaching nearly the full height of the building, with thin, vertical metal mullions running through each floor. The concrete on either side is bare, save for a few vents that are covered by metal screens. The ground floor has three entrances in the glass wall - a revolving door at the west, a set of steel-framed glass double-doors in the middle, and a set of shorter double-doors with a transom at the east. All are covered by a metal canopy. At the ends are metal service doors. A projecting, 3-story vertical sign is mounted to the facade left of the glass section at the 2nd-4th floors.
