History The old name of the village of Velika is Velibash, and then - Poturnak. It was originally located in the area of Tsarkvishteto. During the suppression of the Ilinden-Preobrazhensko Uprising in 1903, 45 houses in Velika were burned by the Turkish army, and 55 were looted. The population was expelled. Until the Balkan Wars, the village was inhabited by Poturnaks (Christians who converted to Islam) from Northern Bulgaria, who emigrated after the Inter-Allied War in 1913. They were replaced by 66 Bulgarian families from the village of Velika in Eastern Thrace. In September 1937, Poturnak was renamed Velika. There is an Orthodox church in the village called "St. Prophet Elijah", consecrated in 1934.
