Alta Mesa I & II and Alta Mesa III are located on top of the mesa about 1½ miles northwest of Whitewater, California (at Interstate 10 Exit 114). Alta Mesa I & II was commissioned in 1988 and consisted of 116 Danwin 23/160 (160-kW) wind turbines, and Alta Mesa III was commissioned in 1995 and consisted of 42 Vestas V27 225-kW turbines. The turbines of both wind farms were mounted on monopole towers (so it is easy to distinguish them from the trestle towers of the Mesa wind farm, to the west and the north) and together they had a nominal capacity of 28 MW. Some of the turbines have become decommissioned (and sometimes removed) over the years.
