O.R. Taylor Residence (Kensington, New York)

USA / New York / Great Neck Plaza / Kensington, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast

Residence designed by architect Aymar Embury, II c. 1912 in the Colonial Style for O. R. Taylor. Early in his career, Embury was known as a “society architect,” a builder of country houses for the upper middle class; designing several homes in the Village of Kensington and Garden City as well as notable estate residences.

In 1915, the Beverly Road house was purchased by Guy Bolton, renowned American playwright, librettist and author, as a wedding gift for his bride, Marguerite Namara, an acclaimed soprano. Bolton began his working career as an architect, helping to rebuild the military academy at West Point and designing the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument and the Ansonia Hotel in Manhattan. He later became one of the most regarded American playwrights of all time. The Village of Kensington was known as a colony where the cultural elite of New York decided to live.

The home recently underwent a four-year restoration from 2011-15 under current homeowners Yael Freeman and Avi Reshtick. The home has been recognized in 2016 by the Great Neck Historical Society for its outstanding historic integrity.
