The hospital was built in the Queen Anne style and opened in the 1880s when it had consulting and waiting rooms for 180 women and 150 men.

There was also an in-patient department with 21 beds and an operating theatre, with medicated baths in the basement.

Completely vacant for several years, it was put up for sale in 2017. Three storeys plus basement; 5 bays stepped towards the road, the first 2 with little pediments, the third containing the door up steps and within a porch on which balances a perhaps later canted structure, the fourth narrow and surmounted by an octagonal storey with louvred cupola and the fifth broad and with a subsidiary door and a Venetian-type window with the date. The windows all tall sashes with pediments on keystones or segmental heads.
