Established by Thomas F. Griffin in 1877, Griffin Wheel Company produced iron railroad wheels. In 1885, Thomas and his two sons had plants in Detroit, Chicago, Buffalo and St Thomas Ontario. Further expansion led to the company becoming the largest manufacturer of railroad wheels in the world by 1914. American Steel Foundries acquired Griffin Wheel in 1919.
The Detroit plant operated until the early 1950s at which time the company transitioned from iron wheels to steel wheels.
