Rinshed-Mason

The origins of the Rinshed-Mason Company go back to 1896 and the establishment by avid hunter and sporting goods store owner, William J. Mason, of Mason Decoy Company, a manufacturer of duck decoys for hunters. The manufacture of decoys involved extensive use of paint and lacquers to accurately reproduce plumage and other duck features, which allowed Mason to become knowledgeable about paint and its characteristics. Mason Decoys were known for holding their superior paint for decades. In 1919, Fred Mason incorporated Rinshed-Mason Paint Company along with paint salesman Fred Rinshed.

From its inception Rinshed-Mason, provided paint and lacquers to the burgeoning automobile industry. It soon became the industry's largest paint supplier, furnishing paint for most car manufacturers. Rinshed-Mason was the first paint company to supply high performance lacquers to Cadillac. Rinshed-Mason also pioneered Florida testing to assess the weathering abilities of paints, which became the industry standard. It launched the first tinting base system in 1948, signaling the birth of the mixing machine, which continues today to be the industry standard.

Inmont

In 1965, Rinshed-Mason was acquired by Inmont , which became a part of United Technologies in 1979.
