"Three Brooks"

USA / New York / Matinecock /
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast

Residence designed by Harrie T. Lindeberg c. 1930 in the Tudor style on originally 21 acres for Charles Thomas Church, Sr {industrialist}. Church was a founder and president of Church & Dwight Co., manufacturers of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. Church's brother had a residence by Lindeberg with a shared driveway; the two were separated in the 1960's. During the depression, the Church brothers gave the Shu Swamp portion of their original property to New York State and endowed it with a fund that provides for a caretaker and maintenance of the Chas. Church Nature Preserve.

The interiors were recently decorated by Markham Roberts.

  • I've heard that this is only one third of the house and that there was a fire in the middle of the mansion. Following the fire the two wings of the house were built to be individual residences. Please confirm.
  • i don't think so...i have pix of both houses, and that doesn't seem to be the case
  • No. There are 2 distinct private residences designed by Lindeberg for the 2 Church brothers. The houses used to share 1 main driveway that split to the two residences. They each now have their own main drives.
  • The previous poster is correct. The houses were always distinct, completed in 1929 for the Church brothers who, during the Depression, gave the Shu Swamp portion of their original property to the State (and endowed it with a fund that provides for a caretaker and maintenance of the Chas. Church Nature Preserve). Both houses have been privately occupied by different since the 1960's.
