Notes: This plantation was originally built as a hunting retreat for Edgar Monsanto Queeny of the Monsanto corporation. The entire property spans some 14,000 acres of land, with just under 5,500 of those included in its NRHP listing. The 4,000 acre Peckerwood Lake was created by Queeny to serve as a duck-hunting environment and source of irrigation for the plantation\'s land. In addition to his work running the Monsanto corporation, Queeny was also a noted conservationist, and he published several books on the study of waterfowl.
