The airport was opened in October 1943 as Stuttgart Army Airfield by the United States Army Air Forces and was used as an advanced twin engine aircraft training school during World War II. Stuttgart AAF was commanded by the 426th Army Air Force Base Unit, part of the AAF Southeast Training Center.
