museum, house, place with historical importance, Eclectic (architecture), NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, visitors center, American Civil War 1861-1865
Historic house listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Built: mid to late 1820s
Alterations: multiple remodelings and expansions through the years; the most significant exterior changes occurred in the 1870s, when the home took on its current New Orleans-tinged appearance.
Architectural style: Eclectic; Southern Colonial Revival
Areas of significance: Exploration/Settlement; Literature; Military
Notable past owners: Hanks family - One of the earliest settler families of this area of Arkansas; several members of the Hanks family had very active political careers in the territory, and later state, of Arkansas.
Area: less than 1 acre
Also known as: Hanks Homestead
Date added to NRHP: 10/22/1974
Notes: At the time of this home's listing on the NRHP in 1974, it was believed to be under the longest single-family ownership of any structure in Arkansas. Today, the property has passed out of the Hanks family's ownership, but it is still believed to be the oldest existing structure in Phillips County. As of early 2017, the house is undergoing a renovation in preparation of opening to the public as a visitor center for the many historic Civil War sites in the Helena area. The house itself was occupied by the Union Army during the war, and oral history indicates it may have been used as a field hospital.
