Once a sharp right-hand turn on the Mississippi River for ships heading downstream, the site was a navigational landmark and a historic site for the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes.
The river cut thru the narrow neck of land just east of the bend in 1874, leaving the bend stranded and silted, merging it with the Arkansas shore although Mississippi retains ownership inside the bend.
