Notable past owners: Charles R. Handford (1842-1911) - Successful lumber magnate; founder of C.R. Handford & Company. Handford moved his business to Batesville in 1884, after successful stints in Iowa and elsewhere in Arkansas. His company supplied large amounts of lumber to various railroads in this area of the country. Handford also served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
