railway, summit, abandoned / shut down, mountain pass

Northern Pacific opened this rail line over the Continental Divide during 1888, at an altitude of 6328'. Burlinton Northern took over the line during 1970, and closed it during 1983. This railroad crossing is now owned by BNSF Railway, and could open again in the future to rail traffic. America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Divide, of which 10 other crossings remain in use.
