Montana Rail Link's crossing of the Continental Divide is through this 3426' tunnel, at an elevation of 5566'. Northern Pacific built this line during 1883. In 1970, Northern Pacific was merged into Burlington Northern, which operated this line through 1992, when it was leased to Montana Rail Link (which leased the portions of the line from Helena east and Phosphate west in 1987). There are 10 other tunnels located on Montana Rail Link's mainline, and they are located at Bozeman, Garrison, Nimrod, Bonita, Philemon, Quartz, Donlon (2), Quinns and Cabinet. America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Divide, and this is one of 10 that are still in use.
