The DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Detroit Downtown - Fort Shelby is located in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. The original 147 ft (45 m) 10-story Fort Shelby Hotel opened in 1917 with 450 rooms and was designed by Schmidt, Garden & Martin. A 242 ft (74 m) 21-story tower, designed by Albert Kahn, opened in 1927 and added another 450 rooms.
Having faced hard times through the Great Depression and World War II, the original owners sold the building to Albert Pick Hotels in 1951 and it was renamed the Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel. Because of declining business, the hotel closed in December 1973. From February to May of 1974, it operated as The Shelby Hotel before closing again. A tavern operated on the ground floor for many years until its closure in 1998.
From May 2007 until its reopening in December 2008, the Fort Shelby hotel underwent an extensive restoration and renovation. The hotel now has 203 rooms in the 1917 building and 56 apartments in the 1927 building. It also has a 21,000 sq ft (2,000) conference centre with 2 ballrooms and 17 breakout rooms, a restaurant and lounge, a fitness centre, and a business centre.
