"Caumsett" Polo Stables (Lloyd Harbor, New York)

USA / New York / Lloyd Harbor / Lloyd Harbor, New York
stable, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Georgian (architecture), outbuilding

Like the main manor house, the Polo Stables were designed by architect John Russell Pope in the same Georgian Revival style. The building has stalls for 16 horses. The stables were ornamented with a matching pair of working fountains and a clock tower. Apartments in the building were home to several staff who worked in the stables. Riding was a very important part of life at Caumsett.

Pope designed an equestrian palace in the manner of Sir Christopher Wren to rival the greatest stables of England and the continent, replete with Georgian elements: the central arched portal with fanlight, modillioned pediment, clock and cupola above, flanked by porthole windows and bookended by two baroque flanking wings caped by Dutch gables with broken pedimented carved stone fountain niches. Surely one of the most elaborate and beautiful equestrian buildings in the United States.

The Polo Stables and fields are operated by Willow Tree Equestrian Center under contract from New York State and are not open to the general public.
