Huge new apartment building opened in 2021, on the site of the historic Statler Hilton Hotel

The sixteen-story, 800-room Statler Hotel, built in 1914, was designed by George B. Post in the Renaissance Revival Style. Fixtures were designed by E.F. Caldwell & Co. A 200-room addition, constructed in 1916, brought the total area of the hotel to 515,000 sq. ft.
In 1954, it became a part of the Hilton hotel chain when Hilton acquired the Statler hotels. Despite several renovations and modernization attempts, occupancy declined. A private group bought the hotel from Hilton in 1969 but arranged for Hilton to operate it on their behalf. Hilton terminated this arrangement in 1974 with occupancy at 20 percent. Renamed the Detroit Heritage Hotel, it closed permanently in 1975. The hotel was demolished in 2005 after being vacant for 30 years
