Originally an upper-end apartment-hotel built in 1926. The Whittier is actually two buildings, one is 8-stories and the other 13-stories. The taller tower is designed to accept another 14 floors even though it is built on unstable ground near the river.

During their 1966 appearance at Olympia Stadium, The Beatles stayed at the Whittier.

The hotel was converted to seniors' housing in the 1970s and closed in 2001. It was listed as a historic site in 1985.
