Originally named Île aux Cochons by the French (1701), and then Hog Island by the British (1760).
Detroit's premier park since it was purchased by the city in 1879. In 1893, the city hired noted landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmstead to design the park. Due to the city's economic problems many facilities have been closed or are neglected. At it's peak, the park had riding stables, an aquarium and zoo. The conservatory is the oldest in the US.
