  • Camp Maxey was built to train soldiers for World War II and also to house prisoners of war. German soldiers (and even their Yankee guards) had never seen armadillos before. The sudden end of WWII left the army with a huge amount of unused munitions at Camp Maxey, which could not be dumped onto the surplus market because it would ruin the gun manufacturers. Most of the buildings were demolished, Camp Maxey was decommissioned, and most of the rifles, grenades, ammunition, machine guns, etc. were buried on site. So far as is known, that is where they remain. Today the National Guard uses the property for training.
  • As I heard it, the Germans would call the armadillos " panzer swines" translated to English "armor pigs",
