Notable past owners: M.E. Davis - prominent African-American self-made businessman and real estate developer. Davis was instrumental in encouraging impoverished African-Americans to move to Dermott, mostly from Louisiana sugar cane plantations, to begin new lives with improved economic prospects in a town with opportunities for steady employment. These newly-arrived blacks would often stay with Davis in this house until they were able to strike out on their own, often into new homes built on land sold to them by Davis himself.
