condominium, high-rise, 1989_construction
207-foot, 21-story postmodern residential building completed in 1989. Designed by Polshek Partnership Architects, it has a large 6-story podium base topped by a spacious sundeck and a slab tower toward the north end. All the facades are clad in red brick (except for the west-facing elevation of the main tower, which is mostly grey brick), with white stone and grey metal accents. The base is seven bays wide along 8th Avenue, with open corner bays that have wrap-around windows. On the north and south elevations, the 6-story portion of the base spans one bay, with five more bays of the ground floor to the east. The tall ground floor is lined with storefronts along the avenue, and partially around the sides and has squares of dark-colored brick at the bases of the piers and above the corners of each storefront. There are also two square vents above the storefronts in each bay. The rest of the floors of the base are divided by stone band courses. Small squares of dark brick appear on the piers at the 5th & 6th floors. On the 2nd & 3rd floors, there are two windows in each bay; those in the 3rd bay from the north are narrower than the rest. The windows on the 4th-6th floors are joined by grey metal mullions and lintels, with grey metal panels around the vents located below each window group. The top of the base has a brick parapet wall, with a stone coping and pairs of square cutouts at each bay, except for the 3rd from the north, which has a metal-and-glass railing directly in front of the tower portion.
The west-facing elevation of the tower has two bays of square windows flanked on the outside by smaller square windows, and recessed balconies with metal-and-glass railings at the corners. The top two floors are slightly set back and clad in red brick, without balconies. The wider north and south faces of the tower have bays of differing window widths, and double columns of projecting balconies fronting two of the bays. Stone band courses divide each floor.
The building has 157 condominium units. The ground floor is occupied by Tend Dental, Just Salad, Chelsea's Signature Deli, New York Sports Clubs, Ace of Fades barber shop, CarePlus CVS pharmacy, and Starbucks coffee.
