using a building of unknown purpuse of the 3rd century, it was changed into a synagoge in the 4th century, thus being the only jewish religious building in Gerasa. In 530/31, bishop Paul let a church build above the synagoge: a basilica with two entrances, that was used by the Christian community even after the demolishing of the Byzantine mosaics by muslims in the early 8th century.
