The 'Dormer House' estate was the former residence of Mrs. Charles Otis Gates (nee Elizabeth Hoagland). The 14,000sft, 20-room residence was designed in the Arts and Crafts and Cotswold style by Theodate Pope Riddle {Avon Old Farms School} c. 1916 in Lattingtown with landscaping by Ferruccio Vitale. Her husband Charles Gates was the president of Royal Baking Powder Co. and a professor of English literature at Adelphi University. Following the departure of the Gates family, the estate was purchased by George and Isabel Dodge Sloane. The Sloanes brought in William Lawrence Bottomley {"Hickory Hill", Lynrose" to do alterations. He also commissioned James W. O'Connor to add a tennis court complex. It was later owned by the late opera singer Patrice Munsel who was the youngest singer to debut at the Metropolitan Opera Company.

In 2014, the attached cottage caught ablaze which quickly spread to the main house which completely destroyed the cottage and killed one occupant. "Dormer House" which was severely-damaged by the blaze was subsequently demolished. The property is currently vacant.
