Historic shipwreck site listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The SS Aleutian (formerly the SS Havana and SS Panama) was a passenger and cargo ship built in 1899. The ship was used during the construction of the Panama Canal, but was later put into service in the American territory of Alaska. On May 26th, 1929, the Aleutian struck a submerged pinnacle rock and sunk. All but one passenger escaped with their lives. Until 1998, it had been widely believed that the ship had sunk to much deeper waters than she actually had. A dive search was launched in 2002 after several years of research and it was located, upright and relatively intact, just off the tip of Amook Island. The wreck's listing on the NRHP followed in 2005.
