archaeological site, tell (mound), ancient ruins
An ancient habitation site on the east bank of the Euphrates in Syria. The Bronze-Age town consisted of a citadel on high ground, and a larger lower town that is currently submerged under the waters of the Euphrates reservoir. The site has yielded cuneiform texts dating to the reigns of the Mittanian kings Saushtatar and Artatama I. These documents provide the probable name of the site, Baṣīru.
