Anthony Campagna Residence (New York City, New York)

USA / New York / Inwood / New York City, New York
residence, Italianate style (architecture), historic landmark

Architect Dwight James Baum with John Russell Pope, as associated architects, designed this massive Italian Villa for developer and builder Anthony Campagna c.1930 with landscaping by Ferruccio Vitale and Alfred Geiffert, Jr. The Italian-born Campagna was a prominent developer and member of the Board of Education of New York City. Although his father was a builder, he graduated from law school at the University of Naples. After visiting New York, a meeting with several builders inspired him to change his profession.

He formed the Campagna Construction Company, and became involved in the acquisition and redevelopment of sites along Park and Fifth Avenues and Riverside Drive during the post World War I construction boom. He directed a $100 million program to construct city schools. While he lived until 1969, he sold the estate in 1946 to the Monitor Equipment Corp. as a corporate institute, eventually being purchased by the company president in the 1960's, George M. Gibson. He sold in 1982, and by 1993 it fell into the hands of the Yeshiva of Telshe Alumni.

The estate is currently designated as a New York City landmark.
