Bank Street College Building

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Bank Street, 69

4-story office/school building originally completed in 1905 as a commercial building for Rudolph E. and Gustave Schirmer, sons of G. Schirmer, the founder of the music publishing house, G. Schirmer, Inc. Designed by Howard Chapman, it was completely renovated in the 1960s with a starkly functional facade that has been completely shorn of all ornament and smooth-stuccoed. Above the ground floor, it has three bays of triple windows separated by masonry pilasters. A rooftop garden has recently been added.

The Schirmers sold the building, which then became the Fleishman's Yeast brewery, and then the Bank Street School for Children, one of New York's foremost educational institutions. The school, led by Lucy Sprague Mitchell, was a leader in progressive education. It has since relocated to 610 W 112th Street.
