According to an officer of the Egyptian Border Guard who accompanied expeditions in the Libyan Desert, this area was mined with anti tank and anti-personnel mines to prevent illigal border crossing from Libya to the Nile valley. No precise information beyond this could be investigated. As this area is very close to the border and not very attractive, one should not run any risk and avoid to drive south of the hill-barrier just north.
