Zug Island (River Rouge, Michigan)

USA / Michigan / River Rouge / River Rouge, Michigan
 island, industrial area, steelworks

A man made, heavily industrialized, island in the Detroit River.

An urban legend attributes the name to the german word for locomotive: zug. Indeed many railroad tracks are present, but the name comes from mid 19th Century businessman and land developer Samuel Zug.

The infamous lost ship SS Edmund Fitzgerald at the time of her final voyage in 1975 was headed to Zug Island's ironworks with a load of taconite pellets.

Current industrial owners prohibit most photography and visitors.

Zug Island was created by Henry Ford to make passage of his ore carriers easier as they transit from the Detroit River up the Rouge River to the Ford Rouge Industrial Complex.
