West of the present town, on a low hill a short distance from it, was the homonymous ancient Boeotian city . The city was founded according to legend by Aliartos, a descendant of Sisyphus. According to Pausanias the city was destroyed by the Persians - especially by Xerxes - during his transition from Boeotia. Outside the walls was the battle of Aliartos, a major battle of the Corinthian war (395 BC) . The city was destroyed by the Romans praetor Lucretius, 71 BC, because he had taken the place of the last Macedonian king Perseus, in his war against Rome. From the walls of the ancient citadel, exist preserved parts of the stone foundation.
