battlefield, place with historical importance, invisible

Site of the Battle of Leuktra, fought between the Thebans and Spartans in 371 BC just to the northwest of ancient and modern Leuktra in Boeotia. Under the leadership of Epameinondas and Pelopidas, the Thebans defeated the Spartans of King Kleombrotos I (who fell in the battle) and undermined Spartan hegemony in central Greece. The battle inaugurated a decade-long period of Theban dominance in Greek affairs that culminated (and ended) with the battle of Mantineia in 362 BC.
