This town was established in 1884 - 5 years before SD became a state. At its peak, it had 600 people and boasted 7 grain elevators, 3 hotels, 4 bars, and 2 banks. It also had one large department store, two general stores, two lumberyards, two churches, two drugstores, and a full K-12 school system (info from the monument on the east side of town). From this peak, it has shrunk to where only about 3 people lived here as of the 2010 census, down from 18 at the 2000 Census - all the mentioned businesses and buildings have long since faded into history.

The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad served this town from 1885 until 1980.
