The Traverse Gap is an ancient river channel occupied by Lake Traverse and Big Stone Lake and the valley between them at Browns Valley. It is crossed by a continental divide, and in some floods water has flowed across that divide from one drainage basin to the other.
Lake Traverse drains North into the Red River into the Hudson Bay. Then Big Stone Lake flows south into the Minnesota River and Mississippi River on into the Gulf of Mexico.
The channel is designated a National Natural Landmark for its demonstration of Ice Age sedimentation.
