West Fargo, North Dakota

USA / North Dakota / West Fargo /

West Fargo is a city in Cass County, North Dakota in the United States. In July 2008, its population was estimated at 23,708. It is a suburb of the neighboring Fargo. This settlement began in 1936 just south of US Highway 10 and the village of West Fargo, taking the name SOUTH WEST FARGO. It quickly grew to be much larger than its older neighbor, which was essentially a company town. The West Fargo post office was physically moved to SOUTH WEST FARGO in 1948, which took the name WEST FARGO on June 7, 1967, with the former West Fargo becoming West Fargo Industrial Park, and eventually Riverside. The new WEST FARGO continued to grow, reaching a population of 10,080 in 1980, making it a major component of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. The 1967 name change was largely due to the efforts of Mayor Clayton A. Lodoen, a powerful political figure here for many years.
