State Capital and county seat of Burleigh County, North Dakota. Bismarck had a population of 73,622 at the 2020 census estimate. The area was first known as Missouri Crossing after its location on the Missouri River. The city of Edwinton was first formed here in 1872 after an engineer for the Northern Pacific Railway. The name was changed the next year to honor German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, in an attempt to attract German immigrants to the area. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills promoted growth. In 1883 it became territorial capital of Dakota, and upon North Dakota statehood in 1889 it remained state capital.
