Fort Aguada

India / Goa / Taleigao /
 fortification, 17th century construction

Fort Aguada used to be a prison during the Portugese rule in Goa. There is also a light house nearby.
This fort was built in the year 1612. This has two fort known as lower fort and upper fort. Aguada fort was converted into a jail during the Portuguese rule and continued to be a prison for convicts in post-colonial Goa.

Cabral pointed out that in many other countries, old buildings that served as prisons are maintained as tourist attractions.

The 17th century Aguada fort served as a reference point for the vessels coming from Europe during the Portuguese era. A four-storey light house built on the fort in 1864 is said to be the oldest of its kind in Asia. The light house stopped functioning a few years ago.

Aguada derives from Agua (Portuguese) for water. Provided fresh water to thirsty sea faring vessels.
