Navi Mumbai is a city on the west coast of the state of Maharashtra, India. Developed in 1972 as a twin city of Mumbai, it is one of the largest planned cities in the world, with a total area of 344 square kilometres and 163 square kilometres under the jurisdiction of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. It lies on the mainland of the eastern seaboard of Thane Creek. The city limits stretch from Airoli near Thane to the north, to Uran in the south. The length of the city is almost the same as that of Mumbai. The Vashi and Airoli Bridges connect Navi Mumbai to Mumbai. A new link between Nerut and Uran is under construction. The costliest and most developed areas of Navi Mumbai are Vashi and Nerul. As a result, Vashi is known as the king of Navi Mumbai while Nerul is considered the queen of Navi Mumbai. Navi Mumbai has a population of 2,100,000 of which approximately 600,000 come from Nerut and about 400,000 from Vashi while the remainder from Belapur, Kharghar, Koparkhaime, and surrounding areas.

  • The first post-independence development plan for Bombay, formulated by the Mayer-Modak Committee in 1948, suggested satellite towns north of Bombay. Ten years later, the Barve committee suggested the formation of a township on the mainland across the Thane Creek as a counter-magnet to draw away population from the already overcrowded city. This proposal was accepted by the BMC. Although the plan lay dormant for a long time, this was the beginning of New Bombay. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has an area of 162 Sq.km under its supervision. The population of the city as per the census 1991 was 3,97,000 which has increased to 7,50,000 as indicated in the census figures in 2001. ( A rise of 88.91%). The NMMC for the purpose of administration has been divided into nodes. There are 8 nodes in the city. Each of the nodes is divided into groups. These groups are blocks of one or more sector in each of the node. Each group is further subdivided into bits. The administration work is then controlled on a bit basis. Each bit has a supervisor who is required to ensure that all the facilitites provided by the NMMC are in order. Similarly there are 64 electoral wards in Navi Mumbai. A corporator is elected from each of the wards. The administrative bits will lie in one of the wards. The NMMC also has 8 departments. These departments are classified based on the services that they offer to the citizens.

  • Navi Mumbai is a great achievement for the Government of Maharashtra and CIDCO. It is amazing that our Indian people could pull of such a magnificient feat of developing a planned city of this magnitude. The only thing missing is a better green cover due to which it is hotter during daytime. Anyways Navi Mumbai is a example that we can create a better quality of life right here.
