Cathay Bank (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Fifth Avenue, 235

7-story Neo-Classical bank building completed in 1912. Designed by Trowbridge & Ackerman as a store and offices building, the new building application filed for this building in 1911 at the Department of Buildings specified an 11-story building, but an amendment filed during the course of construction in 1912 stated that it would be topped-out at seven stories with the additional four stories completed at some later time. However, this plan was never carried out.

It has a 2-story base with Corinthian orders, dentiled crown and paneled frieze. The large plate-glass windows reveal a double-height lobby area at the front of the building, with stairs to the 2nd floor recessed within the structure. The white terra-cotta upper floors, four bays wide, feature projecting piers, molded columns, windows sills and lintels in projecting continuous bands, and a dentiled roof cornice with finials. The exposed upper portion of the south elevation is clad in brown brick. The building is currently occupied by Cathay Bank.
