plantation, historical building
Early Texas cotton plantation. Greek Revival house was built 1853 by slave labor for owner Leonard Waller Groce and was a central place for social activities in the state during that time. Served as a military base during the Civil War and briefly as headquarters of George Armstrong Custer after the war. From 1873 until their deaths in, respectively, 1907 and 1911 it was the home of renowned sculptor Elisabet Ney (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Ney) and her husband Dr. Edmund Montgomery (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_Montgomery), who are buried in the plantation cemetery. Still a private residence, Liendo is periodically open for tours and for an annual Civil War reenactment. Its website is www.liendo.org
